The Chippewa Falls Police Department is warning residents about the use of a counterfeit $100 bill at a couple of local garage sales.

As the weather starts to warm up and people start to do their spring cleaning, garage sales have started to pop up all over the area.

According to a Facebook post, the Chippewa Falls Police Department received a report of a counterfeit $100 bill at a garage sale on Friday. The post also noted that a similar report was made to the Eau Claire Police Department as well.

Law enforcement authorities described the suspect in the Chippewa Falls incident as a white male driving a light colored pickup truck that was pulling a fishing boat.

According to a WQOW report, in the wake of the incident an Eau Claire Police Officer shared some tips on how to authenticate a $100 bill. Some of the methods include using a counterfeit detection pen and studying the bill for irregularities in look and feel.

If you do find yourself hosting a garage sale and you aren’t sure if you’ve received a counterfeit bill, the United States Secret Service also provides information on how to verify it. Their website breaks down exactly what the bills should look like all the way down to the location of the microprint on the bill. Their online guide can even help you identify an authentic bill simply from where exactly on the bill the colors begin to change and where to look for identifying watermarks.
