MADISON, Wis. (WMDX) – There may be record travel in Wisconsin heading into the holiday weekend for Independence Day.
AAA predicts nearly 1.6 million Wisconsinites will travel for the 4th of July. That’s a new record for the state.
The peak times to be on the road are 2-7 p.m. Wednesday and 2-8 p.m. Sunday.
Construction across southwestern Wisconsin could increase drive times. Officials from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation said construction projects will pause for the holiday. Still, that leaves some areas where work zones could cause extra travel time:
- Columbia County – I-39/90/94 is down to two lanes near the bridge over the Wisconsin River. There will be lane shifts and reduced speed limits.
- Jefferson County – Two lanes are open on I-90/94 bridges westbound near Lake Mills. There will be lane shifts and reduced speed limits.
- Monroe County – Two lanes open on I-90/94 near Tomah. Speed limits may be reduced.
- Sauk County – I-90/94 is open two lanes in both directions between Wisconsin Dells and Portage.
About 71 million Americans are expected to travel for the holiday, also a new record.
