The Deke Slayton Memorial Space & Bicycle Museum in Sparta will host Sharing Space with Deke featuring Hoot Gibson. Gibson was hired as an astronaut in 1978, the first class not selected by Deke Slayton in 20 years. During his 18 year career at NASA he flew five missions, four of them as Mission Commander, aboard the Space Shuttles “Challenger”, Columbia”, “Atlantis”, and “Endeavour”. His final space flight was the first mission to rendezvous and dock with the Russian Space Station “Mir” in 1995. Hoot also participated in Formula 1 airplane racing, often seeing Deke racing as well.
